Gold
Ryegrass

Gold Ryegrass - £price on enquiry

Delivered 48 or 96 bales

Equibale Gold is our premier product.

Focused on customers who simply want the very best for their horses, Equibale Gold is a thick stemmed, first cut ryegrass product of around 10% protein. We select a suitable batch from one location, produced at the same time. Where a customer requires it, we hold it in stock to ensure you have the exact same product throughout your season. In limited supply, it is the best of our annual stock, graded to ensure the batches are as consistent as possible.

We carry out full microbial and nutritional analysis on all batches, supplied free of charge.

Silver
Ryegrass

Silver Ryegrass – £price on enquiry

Delivered 48 or 96 bales

Silver Rygrass is a popular product.

Typically ordered by yards focused on high performance horses, Silver Rygrass is essentially the same high quality product as the Gold Ryegrass and made to the same exacting standards. Silver Ryegrass is made from first year ryegrasses.

This difference is that it comes from mixed batches and can vary as a result of differences in location and timing of production.

We carry out full microbial and nutritional analysis on all batches, supplied free of charge.

Standard
Ryegrass

Standard Ryegrass - £48 per bale

Delivered 48 or 96 bales

Equibale Standard Ryegrass is a more economically priced ryegrass product but still produced by us to the same exacting standards as we apply to Equibale Gold and Silver.

The difference is that standard Ryegrass is made from ryegrasses in their second and third year of production. They are either first or second cut with second cut typically having a lower protein levels in light of the shorter growing time.

We provide analysis but there will be variations between and within each batch.

Meadowmix

Meadowmix Ryegrass - £48 per bale

Delivered 48 or 96 bales

Meadowmix Haylage is made from a mix of carefully chosen mix of grass varieties to mimic the type of grasses a horse might naturally graze. It is produced to the same standards as all of our haylage types.

Perhaps the most traditional of the haylage types, Equibale Meadowmix is chosen by some race horse trainers and studs in preference to a ryegrass based haylage and hard feed is used to get the required nutrition balance. Supplied to many livery yards, it is also fed out of season to give some variety and to customers with horses who they perceive don’t do as well on a ryegrass diet.

Timothy

Timothy - £48 per bale

Delivered 48 or 96 bales

Equibale Timothy is an alternative to the more common ryegrass Haylage and is in high demand.

Equibale Timothy is made from pure timothy grass. It is well known as a great alternative for horses who tend to ‘hot up’ on ryegrass and is also generally suitable for laminitic horses as it has a very low sugar content.

It has a very different – but still highly attractive - smell to ryegrass haylage and tends to be very ‘long stranded’. It is typically an appealing forage for even the most fussy of eaters.

20kg
Ryegrass

Ryegrass small bales - £7 per bale

Delivered 40 bales to a pallet

Typically ordered by yards focused on high performance horses, Rygrass is essentially the same high quality product as the Gold Ryegrass and made to the same exacting standards. Ryegrass is made from first year ryegrasses.

This difference is that it comes from mixed batches and can vary as a result of differences in location and timing of production.

We carry out full microbial and nutritional analysis on all batches, supplied free of charge.

Nutrition
We produce a range of haylage ryegrass, timothy haylage and meadow mix. Each is grown from carefully selected grasses that result in the optimum end product. All products are dust free.
Consistent
As producers, our approach is to make a large amount of haylage in a very short period on our own farm. The outcome is a consistent product, cut at the right stage of growth for consistency.
Reliable
We carry out every operation from seeding to harvest, guaranteeing the end product. Quality control virtually eliminates waste. In house delivery with our own HGV lorry and forklift.

Testimonials
What our customers say....

“Training winning horses is a team sport and Harry and I are fortunate to have a great team here in Dorset. Nutrition of course, plays a great part in our success and I am very focused on ensuring consistent and high quality forage. With that in mind, I am really pleased to be working with Equibale who not only provide the consistent quality I am looking for but their service is great; they have their own lorry and forklift and that makes our life so much easier when it comes to delivery. We look forward to working with Jake, Rob and the Equibale team as we continue to increase our win rate!”

“We came across Equibale a few years ago. High quality, consistent forage is critical for the horses during the season and with Equibale, the product has been all but guaranteed to be some of the best I have come across. On top of that, the service has been excellent and they are very professional; deliveries are on time, every time and they are an easy team of people to work with. We look forward to continuing the association with them over the years.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Haylage?
Haylage is an alternative to hay. Here in North Devon where conditions are favourable for high quality haylage, we grow the range of grasses as specified on our website. They are all cut and then left to dry for a shorter period of time than traditional hay so that moisture content is around 35%/dry matter 65% before being wrapped after baling and compressed tightly to exclude oxygen. A fermentation process then preserves the grass to become “haylage”.
What is the difference between first and second cut?
There are two cuts in a typical year. The first is typically in June or early July and the grass has had plenty of time to grow and mature; the second cut is usually 8 – 9 weeks later. This second cut is lower yield and higher protein by comparison. Generally, well made haylage is hard to differentiate between early and late cuts, unless you have the relevant analyses. Poorly made haylage is poor whether it is early or late.
Why buy Equibale haylage?
We have been producing haylage for 12 years having started on a small scale for our own horses. We learnt that most haylage varied in price and quality and most suppliers do not specialise; as a result we noted that service was well meaning but inconsistent. To deal with this, we decided that our ambition was to produce high quality, consistent haylage and provide high levels of service. That meant we were not going to be the cheapest but we knew that people would pay for service and quality.
Where can I buy Equibale haylage?
We are an online only supplier.
What bales do you supply?
Two sizes – 225kg large bales or 20kg small bales. We deliver 48 or 96 large bales and pallets of 40 small bales. See the “Delivery” section for more.
Do you only deliver large bales to big yards?
Our typical customer has 5 or more horses; our minimum delivery is 48 bales. The bales we produce are of the highest quality and will last but for guidance, they should be finished within 4 – 5 days, depending on weather conditions. 5 average horses will consume a bale in that timescale.
How much does a bale cost?
Our prices change from time to time and can be found in the “Haylage” section for each type. Our small bale 20kg haylage is currently priced at £7 per bale, £240 per pallet. All prices include delivery. See the section on “Delivery” for more information.
Do your prices include delivery?
Yes.
What do I do if I have a bad bale?
We have a no quibble exchange policy. See our terms and conditions for more information.
Can I get a nutrition analysis from Equibale for a particular batch?
We are able to trace every bale back to its field of production and yes, we provide analyses on request.
How much do I feed?
A stabled horse in light to medium work needs around 2.5% of it's body weight in food, with about 70-75% of that being forage such as hay or haylage. For an average 550kg – 600kg, horse this works out around 11kg of forage per day. However, this is only a guideline as horses and the conditions in which they are kept, vary. If in doubt, consult your vet or qualified nutritionist.
What do I do if I have a bad bale?
We have a no quibble exchange policy. See our terms and conditions for more information.

About us
The Withecombe family can trace their roots in North Devon to the early 17th century. For most of that time, they have been involved in farming. Equibale can trace it’s own roots back to 2007 when the Withecombe’s realised that it was more cost effective to grow their own horse feed on their Swanmoor farm for their horses and ponies. From that point, Jake Withecombe who had a talent for the practical side of farm production as well as a quickly deepening interest in agriculture and technology began a new specialist haylage production and supply business with the help of his financial consultant father, Rob. Eventually, the Swanmoor Agri partnership was formed and the Equibale brand – together with the domain name haylage.co.uk – was subsequently created.
Neither Jake nor Rob were satisfied with just the one agriculture business and together they also formed the business known as AgriCamera.co.uk in 2012. To top that, Jake then founded TheFarmingForum.co.uk, also in 2012. From small beginnings with deliveries of small bale hay from the back of a horse lorry back in 2007, Equibale has grown to become a niche forage supplier for a wide ranging customer base, including some well known names in horse racing, competition and polo.
Our ethos has always been to supply a high quality, consistent product that we produce or oversee ourselves, supported by our own reliable delivery service. Being involved in farming reminds you every day that we are entirely reliant on the weather in the UK but to manage that, over the years we have invested very heavily in our equipment. This allows us to produce and deliver thousands and thousands of aromatic large and small bales annually, mostly to repeat customers.
